Primal Fear
Apocalypse
Decent power metal, but with a lack of sparkle.
Over 20 years and 11 previous albums, Primal Fear have proven to be one of Germany’s top powermetal bands. So, what does Apocalypse give us? More of what we expect.
Now that’s both a good and bad thing. On the one hand, the band stick to what they do best,
recording songs with racing riffs and brawling melodies, led by Ralf Scheepers’ vigorous vocals. On the other hand, it’s all a little too predictable, with much here that’s interchangeable with what Primal Fear have done before.
Eye Of The Storm at least offers intelligent orchestration on an epic performance, while The Ritual and Hounds Of Justice are diligently powerful anthems.
But Supernova is a stodgy power ballad, and too much else here sounds like those involved are skating in the comfort zone.
