Geoff Emerick December 5, 1945 – October 2, 2018
A hugely significant component in The Beatles’ success, as right-hand man to producer George Martin, Geoff Emerick was the studio engineer on the band’s early hits and later albums from 1966 to ’69. After the Beatles broke up, Emerick moved to America and collaborated with artists including Jeff Beck, Cheap Trick, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, Art Garfunkel, Split Enz and Ultravox, winning four Grammys along the way. Emerick was 72 at the time of his death following a heart attack.
Paul Curcio Died September 10, 2018
Paul Curcio was best known for having overseen Metallica’s 1983 debut album Kill ’Em All. The New Yorker was a musician who produced other acts and also helped to build studios, but it’s Kill ’Em All, made for just $15,000, that secures his place in metal history. He died of heart failure in Florida at the age of 74.
Oli Herbert Died October 17, 2018
The surviving members of American heavy metal band All That Remains are mourning the loss of their lead guitarist Oli Herbert at just 44. Herbert co-founded the Massachusetts group in 1998 and performed on all nine of their studio albums. “His impact on the genres [of rock and metal] and our lives will continue indefinitely,” the band say in a statement.
Michael Weiley Died September 29, 2018
Georgia Marnham has confirmed the death of her brother Michael Weiley, a co-founding guitarist and singer with the Sydney-based pub-rock band Spy V Spy. The band were named after the comic strip Spy vs. Spy in Mad magazine, and their music tackled such topics as racism, homelessness and contemporary drug culture. Michael had been battling cancer.
Andie Airfix
August 27, 1946 – October 10, 2018
The designer of some of the most famous album art of all time, Andie Airfix has died aged 72 from a short but serious illness. He is probably best known for working on Def Leppard’s Hysteria, and also had Metallica, Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Guns N’ Roses and Whitesnake among his clientele.
