Leader Of Down

Cascade Into Chaos cLeopatra Würzel’s ex-Motörhead supergroup makes posthumous debut.

- Johnny sharp

As our musical heroes leave us at an everincreasing rate, the posthumous rock album genre is growing exponentially. However, that wasn’t what Leader Of Down had in mind when they came together. Motörhead guitarist Würzel formed the band with bassist Tim Atkinson in 2008, but after writing dozens of tracks Wurzel sadly died in 2011. Atkinson carried on planning their debut album in his late bandmate’s honour, bringing in guests including Lemmy and Fast Eddie Clarke – both of whom have also passed away since making their contributions.

The band endures, though – they’re touring with Phil Campbell’s Bastard Sons this month – and this record is an impressive showcase for their ongoing career. The two Lemmy-fronted tracks are particular standouts, with Paradise Turned Into Dust fuelled by a chunky riff and Laugh At The Devil providing a furiously urgent, Motörhead-esque speed-metal sign-off.
