State Of Euphoria: 2CD Deluxe Edition iSlanD/uMC Enhanced Euphoria.
Just as associations with an ex-lover might taint someone’s view of a popular song, so a stressful recording process can tarnish a musician’s perception of their own work. Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante, conscious of the fact that the band considered State Of Euphoria (1988) to have been rushed out unfinished, asked fans for their opinions during the preparation of this deluxe edition. Twelve pages of passionate testimonals accompany the sleeve notes, suggesting that whatever its flaws, the album has plenty in its favour. For those of a similar mind, the addition of remastering, B-sides and audio-collage edits blending work-in-progress stages of each album track will likely enhance your enjoyment.
Despite State not equalling the might of predecessor Among The Living, there’s no lack of strong material here. It’s packed with ear-grabbing riff shifts and tempo twists (Schism, Finale), frequently overlaid with lasting melodies, hit single Make Me Laugh a case in point. A few too many choruses feature vocal lines which simply double the guitar riffs, lacking the same variety offered by past glories such as the harmonised Indians or the gang-chanted Madhouse, but the band’s adrenaline-shot delivery ensures that overall State Of Euphoria remains an invigorating thrashfest, now strengthened by desirable bonus material.
