Yessongs SCREENBOUND INTERNATIONAL Rainbow ‘72 concert film, now in immersive 5:1.

- Fraser Lewry

In a world filled with extravagantly padded special editions of products we already own, this version of Yes’s concert film, shot at London’s Rainbow Theatre in 1972 and shown in cinemas the following year, is something of a revelation. Because unlike the 2012 Blu-ray release of the same title, which included an hourlong documentary about the band, this rejig has stripped the fat away, leaving precisely the same footage as that enjoyed by people watching it on VHS back in 1991. The 5:1 mix from 2012, for the quintuple-eared among us, is thankfully retained.

Never the most brilliantly lit of spectacles, the set’s great, and the best bits gleam through the murk: when All Good People bursts into life, or as the Würm section of Starship Trooper winds its climactic way over the end credits. Mainly, though, it’s a vivid reminder of the extraordinary length of guitarist Steve Howe’s fingers.
