Three albums in, and it was crunch time for The Temperance Movement: should they smooth out the rough edges and chase the Radio 2 dollar or double down on what they do best, and make the finest album of their career?

Thankfully, they opted for the latter.

A Deeper Cut was simultaneo­usly lithe and classy, piling on the low-slung guitars one moment, dialling up the heartfelt confession­als the next as singer Phil Campbell worked through his personal struggles with booze and drugs. They were rewarded for their efforts with a No.6 album, their highest position in the UK charts. DE
