Three albums in, and it was crunch time for The Temperance Movement: should they smooth out the rough edges and chase the Radio 2 dollar or double down on what they do best, and make the finest album of their career?
Thankfully, they opted for the latter.
A Deeper Cut was simultaneously lithe and classy, piling on the low-slung guitars one moment, dialling up the heartfelt confessionals the next as singer Phil Campbell worked through his personal struggles with booze and drugs. They were rewarded for their efforts with a No.6 album, their highest position in the UK charts. DE
