That Thunderbolt is Saxon’s 22nd studio album is a pretty extraordinary fact. Fronted by one of the most recognisable voices in metal – the irrepresible pantomime dame known as Biff Byford – and clinging onto a twilight years purple patch of form that has endured for almost two decades, the British quintet still crank out the riffs with the kind of enthusiasm and commitment that puts so many of the young ’uns to shame.
