Cherie Currie & Brie Darling

The Motivator

- Rob hughes

Blue ÉlaN US rock trailblazers unite. What could possibly go wrong?

There’s no denying the pedigree. Prior to joining American Girls and Boxing Ghandis, in the 70s Darling was singer/drummer with pioneering female rockers Fanny. Lead vocalist Currie, of course, endured the roller-coaster of The Runaways during the late 70s, before moving on to a fitful solo career. The pair first met during sessions for last year’s Fanny reunion album Fanny Walked The Earth, on which Currie was a guest. Making an album together might have felt like a good idea at the time, but the result proves otherwise.

Aided by various family members (among them Brie’s producer/husband Dave Darling and Currie’s sister Sondra (most recently seen in The Hangover trilogy), The Motivator consists largely of overwrought covers of rock standards – For What It’s

Worth, Gimme Shelter, Something In The Air and the like. The duo’s three originals at least manage to dial down the wince factor, although none of them are likely to stay in your head. ■■■■■■■■■■
