RRRags
High Protein LAY BARE
Caught by the fuzz.
A power trio in the classic style, RRRags sound lean and mean on this followup to their short, sharp self-titled debut of a couple of years ago. That first was a mere six tracks, and here they manage eight. But what High Protein lacks in numbers it more than makes up for in quality – crunchy heavy blues rock, cranked out with a keen ear for Grand Funk, Blue Cheer and a whole heap of fuzzed-up groove pioneers.
Top jam here is the lengthy Dark Is The Day, built on an insistent laid-back bass drone and some deliciously languorous guitar lines, with singer/ drummer Rob Martin’s voice drifting off into a suitably lysergic sunset of the soul. Elsewhere, Sugarcube and Messin revel in some ragged muscular riffing, Hellfire and The Fridge demonstrate a certain Hendrix-y charm, while mellow Planet Caravan-esque Window is an appropriately cosmic closer. Simple, yet so effective. ■■■■■■■■■■
