WET WET WET

The video for Only Happy When It Rains, which dominated MTV on its release, was shot on an unusually – but fittingly – cold and wet day in Los Angeles, and was directed by Sam Bayer, who also shot the iconic clip for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.

“We shot all this footage on a lot in Hollywood with these Edward Gorey figures holding umbrellas and whatnot,” says Manson, “and none of it made the cut. None of it at all. It was funny, because it was a complicated shoot, we had children all dressed up in costumes. But we were all in such a euphoric high that it just all went by in this crazy flash of time. Working with Sam Bayer was really rewarding. We had great chemistry with him. He’s really high-energy and he brought this madness to the set that rubbed off on us.”
