Sun King Rising

Signs & Wonders

- Hugh Fielder

PEACOCK RISING Making them so very happy.

John Blangero put his burgeoning career as a pianist/ singer-songwriter aside some time in the 70s and became an acclaimed genetic scientist. Now he has returned to music under the name Sun King Rising.

He calls his style “the new wave of southern rock and soul music” although his contemporaries will probably find familiarities with late-60s big bands like Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago. But the sophisticated arrangements and literary lyrics on this second album give his songs a distinctive character that grows on you after several listens, just like albums did back in the 70s. But that was then. These days an instant hit is required, a flash of inspiration like a Walking In Memphis, and there is no obvious candidate on this record.

Meanwhile a rewarding club career beckons for an audience who are happy to go home with the warm glow of an evening well spent.
