SILVERSTONE MARKS BTCC’S 60TH BIRTHDAY
This year’s Silverstone Classic will celebrate 60 years of the British Touring Car Championship with a special parade. The Austin Westminster that won the inaugural Saloon Car Championship in 1958 in the hands of Jack Sears will lead the 60-strong demonstration alongside the Subaru Levorg that Ash Sutton took to victory in the 2017 BTCC. They will be joined by Frank Gardner’s 1968 title-winning Alan Mann Racing Ford Escort, plus former champions such as John Cleland and Jason Plato.
The lunchtime parade will be part of ‘Tintop Sunday,’ on which more than 150 saloons will compete across four races, from Minis and Lotus Cortinas to American muscle cars and Super Touring machinery.
Other celebrations at the meeting, which takes place from 20-22 July, include 60 years of Formula Junior and 80 years of the Ace Café. The Daytona 24 Hours will also be honoured with a sports car race into dusk on Saturday. See silverstoneclassic.com for information.
