Trust acquires a Trojan
To many, the Trojan name conjures images of a dated car on thin wheels with solid tyres, but the Croydon firm experimented with a number of more unconventional cars and the Trojan Museum Trust has just acquired a 1931 RE – rear-engined – saloon known as the Guildford.
“The RE was designed by Leslie Hounsfield and was meant to have a variety of innovative design features,” said the Trust’s David Hambleton. “The engine was mounted in a box at the back, which also housed the gearbox, drive chain and the radiator. The idea was that you would drive your car to the nearest Trojan garage, where they could unclip the box – complete with back axle and braking system – and would replace this with a ‘courtesy engine’.”
