Classic Sports Car

Best of the Bs

-

Further to your story comparing different versions of the MGB (C&SC, February), over the years I have owned an early B roadster, an early BGT, a 1972 Costello V8 GT, and now a Huntsman BV8 roadster. I also test drove, but never bought, a ’69 MGC, which had very disappointing handling.

I have enjoyed all of these cars, especially the ’69 B roadster. The Costello was, in its day, remarkable and a great car, but Dave Franklin’s Huntsman BV8 is by a mile the star. Dave’s experience in racing Bs and V8s shows through in the superb handling of the Huntsman, as does his attention to detail. My car benefits from a 4-litre TVR engine.

It remains a disappointment that MG was never allowed to develop a true sports car using the splendid Buick-derived V8. The RV8 was at best a poor compromise, and much too late in the day.
