34 Volkswagen Type 2 Camper

-

Classic campervans are hot property, and with very good reason: they’re versatile, plentiful and have achieved true cult status, plus with a dizzying array of layouts available there’s sure to be one to suit your needs. With the first-generation ‘Splittie’ models now priced well beyond the reach of most mere mortals, you’ll want to start your search with the post-’67 ‘Bay window.’ Prices vary wildly depending on condition – search hard and you can pick up a project camper for as little as £5000, whereas a concours-worthy effort could set you back £35k – but our £15,000 budget should land you a tidy example, albeit with a high mileage.

Take your time choosing, though, because there’s an awful lot that can go wrong with a Bay. Rust is a major issue, but everything from the engine to the pop-up roof and internal electricals should be looked at. With that in mind, it’s worth considering the third-gen T25 model, too. The wedge-shaped profile isn’t as pretty, but they’re cheaper to buy and will almost certainly cost less to maintain.
