41Triumph Dolomite Sprint

-

In the early 1970s, Leyland engineers created the Dolomite Sprint in response to the BMW 2002. The objective – to increase the Dolly’s performance – was simple, but the recipe decidedly less so. Led by Spen King, the men in white coats increased the engine capacity to 1998cc and developed an advanced 16-valve, single-overhead-cam cylinder head – the first of its kind in a mass-produced vehicle. Paired with bigger carbs, the new unit produced a healthy 127bhp, resulting in 0-60mph in just 8.4 secs.

The combination of four-door practicality and sports car pace is as attractive now as it was in 1973, so values are on the rise. Tidy examples change hands for around £7k, but even a great car should leave plenty of change from £15,000.
