48 Porsche 944
Once the poor cousins to the rear-engined 911, transaxle Porsches are now experiencing something of a renaissance and, as 928s and 968s continue to shoot up in price, the bettervalue 944 becomes an increasingly attractive proposition. Early cars remain ridiculously cheap – £5000 for a rough runner – but the pick of the bunch is the S2 Turbo S, which featured a 250bhp engine and Koni adjustable dampers, while front brakes came from the 928 S4.
The same engine was fitted to the stunning Turbo Cabriolet of 1991 – just over 600 were made, 100 of which were right-hand drive – which is hugely desirable and, sadly, nearly twice our budget. With £15,000 in your back pocket you’ll have a choice of S2s and full-fat Turbos, so can afford to hold out for a clean example with full history and hopefully no nasty surprises.
