45 Volvo Amazon
Of all the classics in our list, few are as multifaceted as the Amazon, a car capable of being everything from load-lugging workhorse to special-stage campaigner, and practically everything in between. Beginning production in 1956, the Amazon shared much with the earlier PV444 including its 1.6-litre B16 engine and three-speed manual gearbox, but offered greater practicality thanks to three distinct body styles: coupé, saloon and estate. Usability only increased with the arrival of the more powerful 1.8-litre B18 in 1958, which the model retained until 1969 when the displacement was increased to 2 litres.
The Amazon’s combination of superb build quality and dynamic handling have made it a big hit in historic rallying circles, and demand for clean examples is on the rise. Plenty were built, so prices vary hugely – anywhere from £2-30,000 depending on spec and condition. We like the two-door 123GT, which boasts a livelier cam and can be yours for around £10k.
