46 Willys Jeep

-

Often hailed as the original and the best, the Jeep spawned not only a host of imitators but can also be held directly responsible for the birth of the Land-rover. The Willys Jeep went into production in 1941 in direct response to the US Army’s requirement for a quarter-ton cross-country reconnaissance vehicle. Ford and Bantam also submitted proposals, but eventually Willys was selected as sole supplier – something that within the year would become impossible due to the demand. Ford was brought back on board and instructed to manufacture Jeeps to Willys’ specification, designated Ford GPWS.

Although the values of genuine Willys Jeeps with known military history will often be well north of our £15,000 limit, there are examples to be had within the budget – particularly if you’re happy to settle for a GPW. Post-war alternatives such as a Hotchkiss or Mahindra will often be cheaper but, whichever you buy, they are relatively simple to maintain. The driving experience might be stripped back and as pure as you can get, but a well set-up Jeep is easy to drive and, crucially, LOTS of fun.
