THE BIG PICTURE
As wildfires once again ravaged California this August, they revived painful memories for the victims of the devastation that hit the region a year ago, when 44 were killed and more than 100,000 were forced from their homes. But sometimes beauty can be born of tragedy, and the ‘Art out of Ashes’ project hopes to harness that beauty to support those affected by the fires.
Inspired by Richard Misrach’s images of the 1991 Oakland Hills fires, Russell Hyzen and photographer Scott Maddern set out to capture automotive remains in the Santa Rosa area for a series of dramatic studies, including this 1931 Ford Model A Five Window Coupe. The images have been reproduced as limited-edition prints and a beautiful hardback photobook; to order, or make a donation, visit www.artoutofashes.org AC
