The captions are at times slavishly comprehensive – one example being a reference to a Transit van in the background – which is almost to the work’s detriment, but it’s saved by the breadth of knowledge shared, and by the affection and humour that runs throughout its 288 glossy pages. One unusual inclusion that may be new even to well-informed fans is the smallblock Chevy V8-powered Mercedesbenz 450SLC that raced Down Under in 1984, and this pleasing inclusivity – as far as both cars and personalities are concerned – is a real strength: it’s not just racewinners and superstar pilots.
