Hard-riding racer
You can’t imagine the pleasure I got from the MGA Twin-cam feature (C&SC, October), in particular the photo of Ted Lund’s ex-le Mans MGA. In the late 1960s I lived in Standish, near Wigan, and Ted’s garage was a couple of miles up the A49. The car was often parked at the front of the garage, probably as an advertising feature.
I used to take my Spitfire and Vitesse there because Lund had a very good mechanic called Bert, who tuned old-style – by ear! I remember him telling me about the MGA and saying: “The suspension is so bloody hard that if you run over a threepenny bit you can tell whether it’s heads or tails.”
Some things you never forget, and I have often wondered what happened to the car, so it’s great to know that it has survived.
