Pedant of the month
Pedant of the month wins a C&SC baseball cap. Send your observations to alastair. clements@haymarket.com I liked the Z1 vs Elan article very much (C&SC, August). Having been brought up on Lotus cars in the ’70s, and been around BMWS since the mid-’80s, it made an interesting comparison. However, I must clarify a few points on the 3 Series’ relationship to the Z1.
The E30 325i did indeed share the same 2.5-litre ‘small six,’ but its designation is M20, not M62, which was the quad-cam V8 found in 5/7 Series models. Also, the 325 never had a 3:46 diff ratio as stated: manuals were 3:64, autos commonly 3:73, Tourings and facelifted Sports 3:91 (limited-slip in the latter). Keep up the good work!
