FORD MODEL A SEDAN

- Eddie Ede and Emma Tye

Despite their classic looks, plenty of hot rods benefit from the addition of modern technology – as illustrated by long-time rodder Eddie Ede’s Model A Sedan: “I’ve had hot rods for donkey’s years – I’m 47 now and I’ve been doing this since I was 15,” says Ede, whose love for hot rods began with a Ford Anglia: “I’ve built many over the years, but this is one I bought from a friend. It was built on Hayling Island 32 years ago, and in 2011 went to a new owner in Essex. What you see here is all his handiwork.

“It’s a period-looking car, but is fitted with a 383cu in stroker with a Fitech fuel-injection system, independent front suspension, plus a Volvo rear axle and a 700R4 gearbox. It’s so nice to drive. I believe it’s putting out about 420bhp, so it’s got a bit of power.”

The car’s previous owner made good use of the Ford’s performance, running a sub-13 secs quarter-mile, doing a wheelie off the line and breaking the ladder bars underneath. Ede continued that tradition at Atomic – after installing seatbelts to meet regulations – and used the event to introduce his partner to the strip: “I used to go up to Shakey before it closed down, but this is Emma’s first time.”
