Hands-on help for mental health
Rusty Road 2 Recovery is an inspired new venture in Bridgwater, Somerset, which opened on 11 January. With a well-equipped garage and workshop staffed by enthusiasts, this not-for-profit organisation will restore classic cars while providing training, therapy and companionship for those suffering from mental illness; for young people who have dropped out of school or found conflict with authority; and for elderly people battling loneliness and isolation.
Sessions will run from 10am to 4pm, with breaks including an hour to discuss therapy, for an initial three days a week until funding permits an increase.
Training leading to recognised qualifications will be offered in welding, and potentially also in panel-making, paint preparation and spraying. The team will concentrate on Morris Minors and Minis – chosen to minimise the risk of restoration stalling due to parts shortages. The finished cars will be auctioned at the NEC Classic Motor Show, with participants present to witness and celebrate the success of their work.
The project is the brainchild of Vince Davis, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 14. Realising the benefits of this type of therapy, but that it is generally not available, he and his friends determined to make it happen. The scheme promises capacity to help some 75 people a week, with ambitious expansion plans. The launch was supported by a gathering of cars from the Bridgwater Classic & Vintage Club.
