Volkswagen Type4
VW always had its work cut out in trying to find a replacement for the iconic Bug. The Type 4, better known as the 411 and 412, proved not to be the answer. Hanging on to the rear-engined, air-cooled concept, this was the last of the breed and its disappointing sales cleared the way for the new-wave Golf. The book covers not only the rise and fall of this transitional model, but the subtext of how the firm found its groove in the early ’70s. It provides plenty of detail on a niche car that was more important to VW than it might appear. DC £35 Marc Cranswick, Veloce. ISBN 9781787115224
