Classic Sports Car

MEET & GREET

How long have you been in the business? I’ve been writing about cars and motorbikes for 17 years.

What’s the most you’ve sold a car for? The most I’ve got for a ‘hobby’ car was £7200 for a 1998 Toyota Supra MKIV Twin Turbo RZS in Royal Sapphire Pearl blue.

And the least? I got just £600 each for a Golf Mk3 VR6 Highline (above) and a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 track car.

What was the one that got away? A Porsche 996.2 GT3, when they were briefly selling for less than £35,000.

What’s the best classic you’ve owned? A Honda Civic Type R EP3 Premier Edition (top left). It was an utterly bombproof performance car that could also be driven daily. Or a big-bumper VW Golf Mk2 GTI 16v in Oak Green. That was great until supplies of things such as rubber window strips got hard to find and expensive.

What’s your dream drive? I’m dreaming of an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. It would possibly be my last chance to own a petrol Alfa that can be used for European road trips. If not that, it would be a Porsche 911 turbo S hybrid from the future.

How’s business? Faring well in a turbulent market with ever-evolving challenges such as rising business costs, the cost-of-living crisis and the hangover from COVID-19.

What does the future hold? Hopefully a return to some stability, and a sense of what the new normal will look like.

What should readers buy now? I tend to ignore what the market is doing: for me cars are a hobby, not a revenue stream.

Tell us something interesting about you I buy cars at a high price and sell them when they hit the base of the value curve. We have one of the last five-pot diesel Volvos (above left) and a Suzuki Swift Sport (top). At some point they will be for sale for peanuts – probably a week before they hit classic status and rocket in value!
