Classic Trial

1966 Sidecar Northern Experts

- Article: Yoomee and Phil Granby • Pictures: Malcolm Carling

The idea of the article’s title ‘Scrapbook’ came to mind as I have many superb unidentified images from before I can remember my early days of trials. These excellent Malcolm Carling images came from an undeveloped roll of 35mm film, and what I would like is some help from the readers of Classic Trial Magazine. The sidecar world in the sixties was in full swing, with very strong entries on a variety of British machinery before the early seventies when the Spanish and Japanese moved in. I am looking for stories behind the names of both the riders and passengers, as well as the machines. Alan Morewood is easily identifiable, as are his passengers, which included his late wife Merle, Andy Barber and a good friend of our family Phil Granby. Walter Bullock I have known for many years and the late Jack Matthews was one of my very early sponsors on my Ossa when I was fifteen years old. These images were all taken at the group of hazards situated in the river below Hawk’s Nest called Robinson’s Rocks. These river hazards are still in use today and, besides the Northern Experts Trial, over the years they have been included in the Clayton Trophy Trial, Reliance, Bemrose and later Dave Rowlands Nationals, as well at Regional Restricted level with the Manchester Eagles Charles Markham Trial and at Centre level with many Manchester 17 MCC events.
