He may now be investigated for many more horrific crimes after his confession, including the hammer-related murders of Lin Russell, 45, and her six-yearold daughter Megan in 1996.

LIVING NIGHTMARE

Bellfield – who has 11 children by five different women – was found guilty of Milly’s murder in June 2011 and given a second full-life sentence.

It’s been a 12-year nightmare for Milly’s distraught parents Bob and Sally – who have another daughter Gemma, 29. Initially, Milly’s father Bob was a suspect, but after he was ruled out the case went cold.

The family was then put through a six-week court case at the Old Bailey when Bellfield maintained his innocence.

In a statement last week, the Dowlers called his confession “devastating for a family that has already had to endure so much.”

Meanwhile, former Met Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton – who led the first Bellfield investigation – is sceptical about the killer’s motives.

He says: “He’s the most selfcentred, controlling, egotistical man I’ve ever met. Anything he does is for his own gain, so he might have confessed to help his chances of parole in the future.

“Confessing now means Milly’s family are forced to come to terms with the fact they now know she was raped before her death. If he was genuinely remorseful and wanted to help the families of his victims, he could apologise for what he’s done but he hasn’t – he’s never shown any empathy for the victims and their families.”
