How does it feel to be back H behind the wheel in a second series of Car Share [which scooped the Best Comedy Show gong at last year’s National TV Awards]? PETER KAY: It’s an absolute joy to be back, and after the first series everything was much more familiar. Also, the weather has been particularly kind to us – we had plenty of sunshine and only one day of rain. SIAN GIBSON: I couldn’t wait to be back in the car because we had such a great time making the first series! What can we expect this time around? PETER: The unexpected… The one thing we pride ourselves on most is that it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen. SIAN: What he said! At the end of series one it looked like a possible romance was on the cards for the pair…? SIAN: I could tell you what happens, but he’d bump me off! PETER: Who me? Charming! Car Share is set around your characters sharing a journey to and from work – listening to [fictional] radio station Forever FM. Do you select the tunes? SIAN: We spend ages going through the music and reminiscing; it’s the most enjoyable part of writing this. We both have the same taste in music. PETER: We’re both fond of One Step Further by Bardo, which is in episode one of the new series. We both made our own video to it back in college in 1995… SIAN: Was it really 1995? I feel old! In series one, you recreated some classic pop videos; do you have a favourite? PETER: Probably Rush Hour by Jane Wiedlin, as we were both in the video together. SIAN: I agree, and I loved the routine. But I think I had the best deal in the pop videos – Anastacia, Cyndi Lauper, and also being in my own animation swimming underwater to MMMBOP by Hanson… Were you surprised by how hugely successful series one was? SIAN: Completely! Even though I know how much people love Peter, I was worried they would be bored with just the two of us stuck in a car. I was so overwhelmed by how much everybody enjoyed it. PETER: Me too! And casting Sian was the best decision I ever made. I knew if we could capture even just a fraction of our friendship, then that would be magical. You’re old pals since studying performing arts together at Salford University; what’s your friendship like? SIAN: We speak to each other every day. PETER: Our relationship has never changed since our college days; we are still as silly and childish. Whenever we work together we get along perfectly.
