‘I often have to sleep with the lights on!’

Ghostbuster Yvette Fielding, 48, is back with another spook-tastic series of Most Haunted on Really…

- By Hannah Wright

Most Haunted is back! And you kick off the new series in the spooky Abbey House Museum, in leeds. How do you choose these places? It’s a feeling you get – I go into them and I know it’s going to be a scary one. It’s like you’re not on your own; something is following you and makes you feel on edge…

You have a new member of the Most Haunted team; Watson the dog...

We live on a 20-acre farm [in Cheshire] and we’ve got four dogs. Our family is very patriotic and I’m a massive fan of Winston Churchill. I thought, we haven’t got a British bulldog – so Christmas 2015 we got him as a puppy and fell in love with him.

How does he feel about the ghosts?

He’s so relaxed that he’ll go into these supposedly haunted locations, have a sniff, plonk himself down and start snoring. When something does happen, he stands stock still, his hackles go up and he’ll stare for ages at a spot where nothing is. Then he’ll do a tiny little growl – and that’s when I know there’s something with us.

Gulp! Does he make you feel a bit braver when tackling the spooks?

I’ve started going off into rooms on my own. I’ve not done that before, but when I’ve got my little mate with me I feel all right. We can’t take him to all the locations, however, because he’s like my baby and I won’t take him anywhere in the car that’s over a two-hour journey. He was offered a chance to go on This Morning but I refused as it’s too far for him!

karl (Yvette’s husband and co-spook botherer karl Beattie) is great as he gets so scared; are there any incidents this time?

It’s a fantastic series as always but wait until you see episode two – it is a defining moment in the history of all Most Haunted. I can’t say more than that but it’s the best thing ever. Karl caught it [on camera], and it’s fabulous…

Anything else you can tell us about the new series?

Something happens that results in me getting really angry with Karl. We were in a particularly spooky location and he was shouting into the dark: “Yeah, come on – throw knives at me!” Then a huge great big carving knife comes flying through the air and hits him on the head. If it hadn’t been handle first, it would have killed him. When people say: “You fake it,” I say: “Why would we throw knives around in the dark?” We had a big barney at home after that!

Do you ban ghost chat at home?

We can’t help it. But when I watch Netflix it can’t be anything scary. I couldn’t watch Most Haunted on my own in the house – I’d have a terrible night’s sleep. And if I’ve come back from a particularly spooky location, I have to sleep with the lights on. My mother won’t even come to the house! My daughter on the other hand [Yvette is mum to Mary, 17, and William, 23] wants to take over from me and keeps saying: “When are you going to give it up?” My son is scared to death of it! l Most Haunted Returns, Fri 14 Apr, 10pm, Really
