What’s Drunk History all about?

The concept of Drunk History involves actors getting sloshed and re-telling historical stories. It’s a great idea, because the tales get told in a completely different way. It’s very funny and you get to work with great actors.

Are you the one getting tipsy?

No! The storytellers were sitting in a warm room getting drunk while I was in tights in the middle of a field dressed as a king.

You have to lip-sync the actors telling the story; is that difficult?

Yes, because they’re drunk. You have to wander around with headphones on, with a drunk comedian in your ear, trying to replicate it. But it’s worth it because the final effect is really good. I’d be up for doing it again – but hand me the whisky bottle next time.

You star in sitcom Episodes with Matt Leblanc. What’s he like?

Matt is great fun on set. He works really hard and he’s a very smart guy. He doesn’t take himself too seriously.

What projects have you got coming up?

I’ve just finished filming a series for Sky called Bliss, about a man with two families living a double life. Having one family is hard enough [Stephen is married to actress Louise Delamere, 47, and they have three sons aged nine, six and 11 months].

How do you juggle being a dad with all this work?

You don’t! It’s difficult. When I get free time, I take the boys to the park for a kick around. But even going out for something to eat with an 11-month-old is like going to Vietnam – you’ve got to get in and out before it gets messy. ● Watch Stephen on Drunk History, Wed 5 April, 10pm, Comedy Central UK
