He’s been keeping a very low profile lately, even sparking fears over his health due to his gaunt appearance.

But, last week, Brad Pitt gave an emotional interview on the split and subsequent divorce proceedings from his partner of almost 12 years, Angelina Jolie, admitting the separation was “like a death.”

Gracing the cover of America’s GQ Style magazine, Brad blamed himself for the split, saying it was “self-inflicted” and revealed how his toxic relationship with alcohol contributed to the breakdown of his marriage.

Brad, 53, said alcohol had become a “problem” in the runup to the split and revealed he has since gone teetotal and has been in therapy in a bid to rebuild his life.

“Truthfully, I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka,” he said. “I was a professional. I was good. I was boozing too much… I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something.”

Period of uncertainty

Brad also admitted he “hit the lottery” in his relationship with Angelina, but threw away his chance of happiness. The actor – who is dad to Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox – said: “I won the lottery and still would waste my time on hollow pursuits.”

Brad added that he’s been “emotionally retarded” in the past and it’s had an effect on his relationship with the children. He says: “It’s hit me smack in the face with our divorce. I gotta be more for them. I have to show them.”

Angelina, 41, filed for divorce in September 2016 citing irreconcilable differences after two years of marriage. She applied for full custody of their children, over concerns about Brad’s alcohol consumption and an alleged physical incident on a private jet between Brad and their son Maddox – which was investigated by the FBI.

‘He has tried to clear Angelina’s name’

Pr expert nick ede gives his take on Brad’s GQ STYLE interview. Nick says: “Brad’s very honest interview is a clear effort to exonerate Angelina from any blame in the break-up. She was vilified by the public after the split and he’s done the right thing by trying to clear her name. In admitting he has faults, he becomes more real and stops the negative opinion of Angelina. This interview was clearly carefully considered and a way of doing damage control. It’s a clever PR move – it allows them both to move on without creating a backlash.” pal, director David Fincher.

But after the case against Brad was dropped, sources have implied that relations between the pair thawed – with reports of the family spending time together at Brad’s LA home last month.

focus on the future

The actor revealed he and Angelina “refused” to be drawn into a bitter custody battle over the children. He said: “It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart… Kids are so delicate. They absorb everything.”

After receiving a standing ovation at the Golden Globes back in early January – his last official public appearance – Brad said his focus is about rebuilding a future with his family.

He admitted: “This period has really been about looking at my weaknesses and failures and owning my side of the street.”
