‘I don’t get steamy fan mail’

Poldark is back, bringing with it more swoon-some Aidan Turner, 33. Closer was lucky enough to catch up with the handsome actor on set…

- By Tim Oglethorpe

Elizabeth is pregnant. is it ross’ child?! I have my suspicions, although I couldn’t possibly say! I do think everyone should watch carefully when the child is born. If he’s got a little Ross-esque scar on his face, you’ll know who the father is! What do you do with your wads of steamy fan mail? It may surprise you to learn that I don’t get any saucy fan mail, or at least none that I see! Maybe it’s censored and I‘m only getting the nice, kind letters. I’m certainly not the recipient of anything rude or sexy. I seem to get a lot of sweets, which might suggest that people are trying to fatten me up! Oh, and replicas of the character in knitted form – little woollen models of Ross. And drawings of Poldark as well? Some are truly amazing; they’re done in oils, watercolour or charcoal. The people who send them in have real talent. let’s talk about the new series and the really burning question: does ross get his top off? Sorry – you may struggle to spot any topless scything this time around! We were filming in February, in Cornwall. What I will say is look out for scenes in the Poldarks’ bedroom – where it was nice and warm – which may or may not lead to Ross stripping down to his waist... Any really tricky scenes to film? The very first one we did for the new series was filmed on a Cornish clifftop, where Elizabeth is trying to control her horse and Ross comes along to help her. We had to use stunt guys for that and then we went back on a later day to re-shoot it because it was difficult to get right. What’s it been like working with animals? My horse Seamus is brilliant – he’s my hero! Though there’s talk of him retiring now and not being part of the fourth series. It will be difficult to say goodbye; I’ve formed a huge attachment to him. And how do you feel about the character you play? On occasions I definitely feel like I’m being taken over by Ross. There’s a scene where he attends a party at a very smart house, with lots of lords and ladies milling around. When it came to shooting it, I just couldn’t nail the dialogue and I wanted to go home. Later on, I realised that because Ross hadn’t actually wanted to be at this party, neither had I! so, the part lingers…? There’s a kind of residual Ross all the time while I’m filming. Which, after three series, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at… And you say this is the most explosive series yet? We filmed some parts in France and the boys got to do a lot more action-filled scenes. It was great fun and there’s nothing like playing soldiers with the lads.
