Turn your home into a goldmine!
Rent your parking space, flog a spare room or use your home as a film set – there are plenty of ways to rake in the cash!
RENT STORAGE SPACE
Whether there’s space in your garage or you have a guest room, you could earn up to £6,000 a year renting it out. “List it on Stashbee.com,” says co-founder Anthony Paine. “You can rent space to local people who need to store things – think of it as Airbnb for boxes!”
DECLUTTER FOR DOSH
Use websites like Gumtree to get rid of unwanted items. “Nine out of 10 of us have up to £1,000 worth of unused items in our home,” says Hannah Wilson, head of marketing at Gumtree. Getting rid of old technology on websites like musicmagpie.co.uk can also be profitable – you could get up to £190 for an iphone 6 and £380 for an iphone 7.
TAKE IN A LODGER
“If you have the luxury of a spare room in your home, taking in a lodger can bring in extra cash,” says Clare Francis, savings and investments director at Barclays. “Do it through the government’s Rent A Room scheme (Gov.uk) and you can earn up to £7,500 a year tax free.”
BECOME A FILM SET
You don’t need a Cribs-style home to be a film, TV or pop video location. Register on sites like Amazingspace.co.uk and Film-locations.co.uk, which offer homes to filmmakers. Production companies and photographers need a whole host of locations to shoot in – and often have a hefty budget.
USE YOUR PARKING SPACE WISELY
Using sites like Justpark.com can make you plenty of money for very little effort. Make sure you’re competitive with the fees charged by local parking authorities and car parks, and you’re in with a shot at making a tidy sum, especially if you’re well-located. “If you live near an airport, major train station, in the city centre or near a particular venue, you could earn upwards of £100 per month,” says personal finance blogger Cora Harrison.
GET CASHBACK
“From listing your home on Homeaway.co.uk and earning an extra £52.50, to selling your unwanted items with musicmagpie or Ziffit and getting up to 10.5% cashback, you can make money from your home by using Topcashback. co.uk,” says Natasha Rachel Smith, consumer affairs editor for Topcashback. “You can even earn cashback when selling your house through YOPA, who allow you to sell your home for a fixed fee rather than a percentage, and offer £65 cashback on the sale of your property.”
HOST TOURISTS
Letting out your home or spare room to tourists can make you new friends and plenty of cash. Airbnb and Wimdu are great options – particularly when big events or festivals are taking place near you, when you can nudge your prices up a little thanks to higher demand.
