Peter Kay: “The final Car Share? Never say never”

As the big send-off for John and Kayleigh hits our screens, Closer chats to Peter Kay and Sian Gibson to find out if they will get their happily ever after…

Fans of Peter Kay’s carpooling comedy were distraught after last year’s heartbreaking finale, when he revealed it would be the last ever outing for supermarket assistant manager John (Kay) and his colleague Kayleigh (Sian Gibson). But the comedian – who recently delighted fans with his first public appearance after cancelling his tour last December due to “unforeseen family circumstances” – eventually did a U-turn, and a final send-off for the pair is about to hit our screens. Here, Closer gets the low-down…

The end of the last series, when Kayleigh walked away from her car share buddy John, had viewers screaming at the telly. How did you feel about that? PETER: It was incredibly flattering. We always knew the second series would end that way [with Kayleigh seemingly leaving John’s life for good when he didn’t reply to her declaration of love] and we thought people might be miffed, but we never knew they’d be so devastated. We decided to write another episode to give the characters a resolve. SIAN: I was even screaming at the telly – and I knew what happened! A petition demanding a conclusion to the series gathered over 100,000 signatures... SIAN: Yes, that was crazy. PETER: You’d never believe it would ever have that kind of effect. SIAN: I signed it twice… What about the John and Kayleigh potential romance…? SIAN: I can’t tell you anything – he’d bump me off. PETER: Who, me? Charming. No, I can’t answer that, she’d kill me… What’s been the funniest scene to film? SIAN: When we were dressed as Harry Potter and Hagrid, giving Elsie the female Smurf a lift home from a work fancy-dress do. PETER: Or in the first series when we had Reece Shearsmith dressed as “Stink” Ray [their whiffy and weird co-worker on the fish counter]. We’re constantly laughing. SIAN: All the fun we have filming, but as I see Peter all the time, it doesn’t feel like they’ve gone away. We speak nearly every day. PETER: We do, but I haven’t been over to Sian’s house in ages. She prefers coming round mine because she gets waited on hand and foot. How many stir-fries did I make when we were writing? SIAN: How should I know? PETER: You see, I won’t miss John and Kayleigh – we’re right here! Will you be working together again? PETER: Hopefully. SIAN: Definitely. I’ll bring the stir-fry ingredients round. Is this really the last ever Car Share? SIAN: Never say never. PETER: Well, unless you’re waiting on an invite to Sian’s house...

SIAN: Leave it!
