The kids are back at school, so we’re all pre­par­ing for those cold germs to strike! If you get a dreaded cough, new of­fi­cial guid­ance says not to bother your doc, but in­stead make a bee­line for honey. Coughs are usu­ally caused by a virus, so an­tibi­otics can’t shift them (they only work on bac­te­rial in­fec­tions). Most coughs will dis­ap­pear within three weeks, but while you’re still hack­ing, dis­solve a spoon­ful of honey in hot water, or just eat it straight from the jar to soothe your throat, and calm the cough.
