‘Renewing our vows w ill help me trust Wayne again’
With her sexy makeover, a return to the UK, and now a second wedding, the Rooneys are determined to move on after a ‘hellish’ year

Their 11-year marriage continued to dominate the headlines in 2019, with reports that Wayne Rooney had stripped down to his boxers during a boozy jacuzzi party with other women, leaving their relationship “hanging by a thread”. He then failed to publicly support his wife Coleen in her infamous WAGatha Christie row with Rebekah Vardy.
But insiders tell Closer that Coleen, 33 – who shares Kai, 10, Klay, six, Kit, three, and one-year-old Cass with her childhood sweetheart of 17 years – is hoping the tide is finally turning after the footballer, 34, proposed renewing their vows in a bid to put their hellish year behind them.
A source says, “Wayne suggested it out of the blue during their recent romantic trip to Dubai and, even though Coleen wasn’t initially keen because she didn’t think it was necessary, she’s now all for it because it will help them move past everything bad that’s happened recently. It also proves how committed he is to her.
“He’s been secretly designing a £250k ring – which includes an Alexandrite stone, the gem stone of their wedding month, June. He also joked that his second proposal was slightly more romantic than his original proposal in a petrol station.”
While their 2008 wedding was a star-studded, £5million ceremony in Italy, this time it will be a low-key affair with their boys playing key roles.

The source explains, “Coleen doesn’t want to try to recreate their big day. She doesn’t care about having an expensive bash, she just wants to keep it all about their new vows and fresh commitment to one another as well as having the support of their families.
“The first time around, her bridesmaid was her late sister, Rosie, who tragically died in 2013 aged 14 from the genetic brain disorder Retts Syndrome. Coleen wants to use the ceremony to pay tribute to Rosie in some way. She insists she won’t have a bridesmaid this time as no one could ever take her place.”
The Rooneys have suffered a turbulent year in 2019. Coleen was said to be tormented in
July when one of the former escorts Wayne reportedly had a threesome with in 2008, Helen Wood, made a string of fresh allegations about the footballer while promoting her tell-all book. A month later, Wayne was spotted getting into a hotel lift with a brunette, following a seven-hour drinking session with his DC United teammates, and reportedly stripped to his boxers in front of three women at a jacuzzi party later that evening.
Furious Coleen removed her wedding ring, which prompted
Wayne to make a shock announcement that he was returning to the UK, saying family “is the most important thing for me”.
Coleen reportedly slapped him with a booze ban. Yet, when she accused Rebekah Vardy’s Instagram account of leaking stories on her – which Rebekah denies – he was pictured days later at a nightclub, being served cocktails by a waitress in a thong, and Coleen was said to be hurt by his lack of public support for her.

However, in recent weeks, they’ve appeared to be putting their challenging year behind them. Wayne posted the first snap of his wife on Instagram in three months during their recent trip to Dubai, and he is back with the family in Cheshire. He’s on his best behaviour, with his new club Derby FC – which he also helps manage – cancelling their Christmas do to avoid boozing, and it’s led Coleen to feel more positive about their future.
Our insider says, “Although it came as a surprise, she’s hoping that this renewal will help them rebuild the trust and seal the hard work they’ve been doing over the past few months. By drawing a line, it clears the way for them to look forward to the future, and make more memories with their gorgeous boys.”
As Closer revealed last week, Coleen has shown off a new look recently – after losing weight and reportedly having Botox, lip fillers and non-invasive liposuction in a bid to reignite the spark in their marriage.
The source adds, “Coleen was already working on her top-totoe overhaul, but having this ceremony to plan has given her even more focus. She was a kid, really, when she and Wayne first got together, and she’s got a lot of new-found confidence.
“Wayne is doting on her and he loves her new image – so she thinks going into this looking her best will mean Wayne stays absolutely committed to his vows, like she always has.”
