Coleen fears Rebekah is set to expose her marriage secrets
As Rebekah Vardy prepares to sue her for libel, insiders fear Coleen Rooney is panicking she may reveal what’s gone on behind closed doors with husband Wayne
She’s never far from drama, and last week Coleen Rooney was weathering a further storm after the “WAGatha Christie” scandal took another turn. Her nemesis, Rebekah Vardy, has launched a £1 million libel claim against her in what could end up as one of the most explosive court showdowns in showbiz history.
Following an unsuccessful attempt to resolve their bitter feud behind closed doors, the warring WAGs are now set to face each other in London’s
High Court. Rebekah, 38, has launched the lawsuit in a bid to clear her name after Coleen, 33, accused her Instagram account of leaking stories about her to the press – something Rebekah vehemently denies.
And while Coleen’s lawyers said she was “disappointed” with Rebekah’s decision to issue court proceedings – adding she feels the time and money could be “put to better use” and her “offer to meet face to face still stands” – pals reveal they think it’s unsettled the mum of four, with sources telling Closer she’s bound to fear details about her personal life could come out.
A source says, “Coleen is sure to be upset by how much the situation has gathered momentum, and Rebekah’s latest move will have really shaken her. The thought of having to give evidence and face a former friend across a courtroom is terrifying, and although she and Wayne have nothing to hide, she’s bound to be tormented by the idea that details about their life together might be revealed.”
SECRETS
If the pair fail to reach a settlement before a trial date is set, they’ll be called to give evidence in front of a judge and jury, with each being quizzed by the other party’s legal teams – a move which could lift the lid on Coleen’s innermost secrets.
The source adds, “Before their friendship soured, Coleen confided in Rebekah and they spoke about some deeply personal matters. She’ll hate the thought of her dirty laundry being aired in public and will be terrified Rebekah may be forced to spill the beans during the course of questioning, which could destroy her peace.”
As Closer previously reported, Coleen and Wayne have been getting on better than ever, with lockdown giving them the chance to spend quality time together. Sources also revealed Wayne was keen for Coleen to put an end to the situation with Rebekah for fear it was putting stress and pressure on her. Insiders now say Coleen is also nervous that a dramatic court showdown could create tension
at home for her and Wayne.
The source says, “Coleen and Wayne are in a really good place thanks to lockdown, but he’s already been worried about Coleen over this legal drama and hates seeing her like that. If it goes to court, she will have lots of extra stress and it won’t end soon. Pals feel it’s only natural that she would fear that their tranquil life together could be torn apart.”
SCANDALS
The WAGs grew close after Rebekah’s husband, Leicester City striker, Jamie, 33, joined Coleen’s husband, Wayne, 34, on the England squad in 2016 – with the fellow mums pictured sitting together at matches and socialising away from the pitch. Proving how close their bond was that year, and rubbishing claims of rivalry, Rebekah previously said, “We text each other and laugh about stories like that.”
Since Wayne shot to fame on the pitch in 2002, the couple have been dogged by rumours of his cheating.
In 2010, claims surfaced Wayne slept with escorts Jenny Thompson and Helen Wood while Coleen was pregnant with son Kai, now ten.
Their marriage was then reportedly left “hanging by a thread” when Wayne was arrested for drink-driving in 2017 after a boozy night out with party girl Laura Simpson.
The source says, “Rebekah was one of the first of the WAGs to reach out when the story broke and comfort Coleen. She even offered to take the boys for a few days to give her head space.
Rebekah’s son, Finley, was nine months old at the time and Kit was a year older, so Coleen really appreciated some support from a fellow mum. She was grateful to have someone who could relate to her situation in the spotlight and be a shoulder to cry on.”
“They bonded over having young children around the same age and, along with their mutual friend and fellow WAG, Anne Kilner, swapped parenting tips and joked about their unruly toddlers, as well as venting about their messy husbands.”
In the past two years, after a brief spell based in Washington,
US, Wayne’s behaviour has raised eyebrows. In January 2019, he was arrested for public intoxication and swearing in Virginia airport. He stripped down to his pants in a boozy hot tub party with his DC United teammates, and in February 2019, was seen having a ten-hour drinking session in Florida.
And while the couple’s 11-year marriage is said to be stronger since Wayne returned to the UK as a player and coach for Derby County Football Club – amid reports he’d ditched booze and partying to focus on life with their children, Kai, seven-yearold Klay, Kit, four, and Cass, two – Coleen is said to be fretting former confidante Rebekah could be pushed to reveal details they discussed in the aftermath of the scandals.
DRAW A LINE
Their friendship imploded last October when Coleen claimed she’d spent five months trying to identify the Instagram account leaking stories to the media from her page – with her so-called detective work earning her the nickname “WAGatha Christie”.
Rebekah – who was on holiday in Dubai at the time and heavily pregnant with her fifth child – furiously hit back to deny the claims, later revealing how the stress of the dispute caused her severe anxiety attacks amid the public backlash.
The thrice-married star – who has Sofia, five, Finley, three, and six-month-old Olivia with Jamie, and two children from previous relationships – claimed other people may have had access to her account and announced a forensic audit of her social media profiles. Since then, the rivals have run up six-figure legal bills to try to get to the truth.
And with a Hollywood film in the works about Jamie’s life – documenting his rags-to-riches story from factory worker to highly paid Premier League player, with an estimated worth of £12 million – pals say Coleen privately hopes they can reach a settlement and put an end to all the drama and backlash so they can move on with their lives.
The source adds, “Coleen will be praying they can come to a mutual agreement behind closed doors so a court showdown can be avoided. She’s keen to draw a line and for everyone to be able put this hell behind them.”
