Katie: ‘Don’t underestimate Meghan – she’s driven and a natural leader’
She went from B-list Hollywood actress to a world-famous member of the
Royal Family when she married Prince Harry in 2018. But recent speculation suggests that Meghan Markle may have her sights set on the White House.
Since stepping down from palace life last January, Meghan, 39, and Harry, 36, have used their fame to highlight social issues. And in September, they faced a backlash when they broke the politically neutral royal protocol and spoke about the US election. She and Harry encouraged Americans to vote, describing last week’s election as “the most important of a lifetime”.
While there’s been speculation over whether Meghan would run for president, her reps rejected the claim, saying she had no current plans. But royal expert Katie Nicholl believes that the Duchess of Sussex may take a shot at the White House. She says, “I’ve had very reliable information that when Meghan and Harry were negotiating whether to have a pre-nup, she was reluctant to give up her American citizenship, as that would mean giving up ambitions for the White House. There’s a strong possibility she could run for office – this is a woman who wants to lobby, who wants to make real change and who isn’t afraid of taking risks. Her team have said she’s not seeking a political career, but her political ambitions are no secret among her friends. I’ve heard the White House has been her ultimate goal.”
Despite being unable to speak about her political views, Meghan took on royal charity work with ease and was vocal about climate change, female empowerment, civil rights and animal welfare. And Katie says Meghan’s activism and drive to make change would fit with a run for presidency. She says, “Meghan’s extremely driven, a natural leader and, as we’ve seen recently, definitely politicallyminded. She found it frustrating not being able to use her voice within the Royal Family and now that she’s out of it, she won’t hold back. She and Harry have supported both humanitarian and political causes, such as the Black Lives Matter campaign. And that’s just the start. It may seem unthinkable, but we’ve already seen the unthinkable happen in them stepping back and moving to the US. She did say to Harry when they met, ‘Together we can change the world’. Don’t underestimate her determination.”
