WOULD LIKE TO MEET...

Closer’s dating expert, Rebecca Twomey, on how to tackle the quest for love during lockdown 2.0, and ways to keep the spark alive with a new flame

-

Before we let this second lockdown get us singles down, let’s remember we already know what we’re doing with video dates, socially-distanced meet-ups and the, um,

“fun” of outdoor pursuits.

I know it’s hard riding out this lockdown malarkey as a singleton, but there are plenty of positives. The last time we were in this position, everyone on apps appeared to be seeking a more emotional connection and more intimate conversation. Things were less quick-fire and it felt like we were reverting back to old-school courtship and romance – things sadly lacking in modern dating.

We also had to get more creative with dates. Instead of the generic “drinks after work”, we’re now going for long walks and even seeking shelter under the bus stop on dates middownpour – or was that just me?

I’m currently in a romantic

scenario that’s not casual but not committed, either, so it’s far too early to bubble together, but I certainly don’t want to throw in the towel. I imagine a lot of other singles are stuck in my situation and, if you want to pursue things, all is not lost.

I’m going to treat mine a little like some of the longdistance relationships I’ve had. Always have a day in mind when you’re going to meet and talk about what you’ll do together – in this case, once lockdown has hopefully lifted. You need to aim for something. Mix up your communication, be it over WhatsApp, video call or on the phone. Send them a song you love, a recipe you could both try together, a cocktail suggestion, text each other while watching the same film – things you can connect over.

And plan some beautiful walks, bring hot drinks in a flask and some delicious treats. Simply try to keep the romance alive. When someone is right for you, it’ll work whatever the scenario – keep positive as best you can.
