‘We’re best mates who get to work together’

Tom Brittney and Robson Green, back as the vicar and his crime-solving partner for another fab season of Grantchester…

-

Where do we find Geordie and Will?

ROBSON GREEN, 57: Where do Geordie’s a fish out of water – detached from Cathy and the kids and living with Will. He’s a shadow of his former self… TOM BRITTNEY, 31: Will is very happy in his work and his life but he wants some excitement. He introduces Geordie to jazz clubs and while they’re there, Will meets someone that changes his life – for good and for bad.

How are things with Cathy?

ROBSON: Although they’re separated, Geordie is the eternal optimist – calling this a “blip”, but he’s quite deluded. His love for Cathy is as strong as ever, but she has moved on and has found a new life and freedom.

Tom, what was it like directing an episode?

TOM: It was amazing! One of the most fun experiences I’ve had on a set. It went a lot smoother than I’d anticipated, and I could finally order Robson about! ROBSON: He did a fantastic job and he made Grantchester a happy place to be, as it always is.

Are you pleased with the series?

ROBSON: We strive to try new things and we’re always making Grantchester better. We wanted this one to be more edgy…

Why do you think it’s such a hit?

ROBSON: It deals with serious subject matters in a charming and likeable way. The viewers care about each character, and everyone involved – in front of and behind the camera – is at the top of their game.

TOM: Everyone cares so much about what they’re making, and it filters down to Robson and I making sure it’s a fun set. I also get to work with my best mate every day!

Is there anyone you’d love to have on as a guest star?

ROBSON: Billy Connolly! And Jerome Flynn, he would be great – he’s a fantastic actor!

TOM: Maybe I could give Tom Hanks a call? It would be great to get him in an episode! We’re always so lucky with the wealth of talent that we get, and that it’s a show that people want to do.

You’re all quite musical...

ROBSON: Al Weaver [Leonard] is a brilliant guitarist and a beautiful singer. Tom is a brilliant guitarist and harmonica player. I play the guitar too, and I’ve sung a bit! I suggested that we include an off the cuff musical interlude, but [producer] Emma [KingsmanLloyd] didn’t entertain the idea. I’ll continue to pursue it!

TOM: We’d love to do an episode where we get to show off our musical skills – but we’ve been rejected multiple times! Who knows? It might happen…

Tom, you had to learn to ride a motorbike for the series...

TOM: Motorbikes are terrifying, and it took a while for me to learn to ride one. I failed the test twice, but now I’ve got my licence I ask for as many bike scenes as possible! Not that exciting for the viewers, but I love it!
