DON’T GET SUCKED IN BY MANIFESTING

Celebs from Ariana Grande to Lady Gaga swear by it, but Emma says there are far better ways to achieve your hopes and dreams

-

These days, I see a lot of unqualified people describing themselves as “experts”. Many are currently suggesting “manifesting” – the idea being that if you think positively about what you want, and believe you can achieve it, the universe will provide. Being positive and having self-belief is essential, but suggesting that creating your perfect life is completely within your power is nonsense. If you could simply “manifest” everything you desire, I’d be writing this column from my beach-front Malibu home! Rather than turning to this unproven pop psychology, use evidence-based strategies. Write down your goals, as seeing them in black and white means you are more likely to commit to them, then look at the paths you realistically believe will take you there. You may need to take a course to up your skills, join a dating app to meet someone, or start applying for better paid positions to enjoy more financial freedom. These actions will remind you that you are in control of your destiny, rather than the universe just making it “happen”. Consider the type of energy you give off in your social and professional life, too. We are naturally attracted to people who are positive, kind and upbeat so, if you are currently negative and downbeat, shift your mindset by reframing negative thoughts. For example, if you have had a bad day at work, tell yourself that tomorrow will be better and remind yourself that it’s great you still got paid. These small shifts can have a transformative impact over time. Rather than paying for a “manifestation” workshop that promises to make you rich, healthy and successful, think about how you can spend your time and money more wisely in pursuit of your dreams.
