GET ON TOP OF ALLERGIES
Tree pollen counts are peaking right now, while grass and weed pollen counts are highest between mid-May and September. Here, Boots Superintendent Pharmacist Claire Nevinson explains what to do to manage your allergy.
● CHECK THE FORECAST
“Keep an eye on the Met Office website for the pollen count so you can act fast if needed.”
● TIME OUTINGS “Around midday is when pollen count is usually at its lowest, so take this opportunity to get outside for some fresh air.”
● BE MINDFUL WHEN OUTSIDE “Consider wearing wraparound sunglasses to help stop the pollen from getting into your eyes. It’s also beneficial to apply a barrier balm of petroleum jelly, like Vaseline, around your nose to trap pollen.”
● TAKE A SHOWER “Change your clothes as soon as you go inside. Take a shower and wash your hair too, as pollen is difficult to remove unless it’s wet.”
● CLOSE WINDOWS “Ensure windows in your car and house are closed to minimise pollen exposure on days when the count is high. It could also be a good idea to dry your washing inside as grass pollen can easily get onto clothes.”
● CLEAN CAREFULLY “Dust with a damp or microfibre cloth and vacuum regularly. This will stop pollen from becoming airborne. An air purifier in the bedroom at night can filter out dust and pollen.”
