Stop Sea Blasts
Actor and activist Joanna Lumley is leading a nationwide campaign to help protect vulnerable marine species from the ‘needless’ detonations of World War II bombs at sea. Writing in an open letter to Number 10, she has urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to support the ‘low order deflagration’ method of ordnance disposal, which allows the contents of the explosive to ‘burn out’ from within rather than existing detonations, which can lead to hearing loss, mass stranding – even death – for traumatised dolphins and whales. After launching Stop Sea Blasts in late 2020, Ms Lumley has received the backing of over 100,000 members of the public to call on the government to make this change.
