Coin Collector

UEFA European Football Championship

-

To mark the UEFA European Football Championship, Germany has issued an €11 coin, reflecting the number of players in a football team. This €11 coin is likely to be unique because the German mint have stated this is likely to be the Federal Republic of Germany’s first and probably only €11 collector’s silver coin.

Three-time winners Germany are staging the UEFA European Football Championship, across ten different venues, from 14 June to 14 July this year. The group stage runs until 26 June, with the knockout stage beginning on 29 June. As the host nation, Germany is seeded in Group A and will play the opening match – against Scotland – at the Munich Football Arena on 14 June.

The competing teams are divided into six groups, with the top two in each group proceeding to the round of 16, along with the four best third-placed finishers. The final will be staged at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Sunday, 14 July.

Germany/West Germany have competed at every Euro championship since 1972, with West Germany winning in 1972 and 1980, while the reunited Germany triumphed at Euro ’96.

The design of the coins uses motifs from the event over a background composed of a stylised image of a football pitch. The initials of the designer, Detlef Behr, also feature in the design.
