Lukewarm about Windows 10

-

Eighteen months ago, I made the switch from XP to Windows 8.1. It took a bit of getting used to (who needs tiles?), but once I had it set up with normal Desktop icons I was quite happy. Then I decided to go for Windows 10. The upgrade took time, but I was very pleased to see a very similar Desktop.

I find the Start button a waste of time because a simple right-click on the Windows icon brings up most things I need. The Edge browser is my main concern because it currently does not support extensions. Also, I’ve been unable to set the ‘Home’ option to anything other the standard Microsoft screen, which includes my news feed. I would love to get rid of it.

I switched off Cortana straight away because I don’t want my computer speaking to me. I may sound like a stick-in-the-mud, but as long as I can use email, spreadsheets, Wordperfect, and the internet, I’m quite happy. 2 advisor told me the problem was caused by a clash between Windows and Norton firewalls. He then assured me he had fixed this and the call ended.

Imagine my horror the next time I logged in to discover that all he had done was uninstall my Norton Security Suite. So, far from fixing everything, he’d left me at the mercy of all sorts of threats on the web. I’m a silver surfer, and there must be a large number like me who rely on the technical expertise of so-called experts. For an organisation like Microsoft to sanction such shoddy customer service is sad indeed. irritating? Let’s face it, more people will pay to avoid one-minute adverts than 30-second ones, and so on. Where do you stop? Perhaps it’s time I got my dusty pack of cards from the kitchen drawer and played Solitaire for real – without adverts!
