Readers’ Tips Index your User Folder contents

Reorganise your Mailonline app

- Fraser Drummond

I read your ‘See all the folders and subfolders on your C Drive’ tip in Issue 504’s Make Windows Better, which explains how to display all the folders and sub-folders in your Users folder as dropdown menus. You can then save this info as a file to your PC. I believe there’s an even quicker way to do this, which I’ll come to.

To remind readers: you open your Command Prompt (press the Windows button, type cmd, then press Enter). Next, type tree, then press Enter. You now see your User folders’ contents as a tree dropdown menu.

One thing you didn’t mention is that it can take a few minutes to see this dropdown menu – depending on how much content is in your Users folder. Mine is about 500GB, so it took a while.

At the end of the tip, you say it’s a good idea to copy and paste the command results to a Notepad or Word file. I have an easier solution. Simply type tree>tree.txt at the end of the command (see screenshot), then press Enter. This saves the results of your command as a Notepad file (called ‘tree’) to the same Users folder. It’s a much faster way of saving your information.

Mailonline app features 19 topic sections (or ‘channels’), which include UK Home, World News, UK Election, UK Showbiz, Sport, and Sci-tech. They appear as tabs at the bottom of the app that you tap to access. There’s an easy way to rearrange these channels so you can prioritise topics that interest you most.

The method varies slightly between Android and IOS. On Android ( www. snipca.com/24743), tap the three dots at the top right, Settings, then ‘Arrange channels’. On IOS ( www.snipca. com/24744), tap the More button at the bottom right, the cog icon at the top right, then tap Reorder Channels.

On both systems, you’ll now see all your channels listed. Tap the three lines beside any channel (see screenshot above right), then swipe it up or down to move it. Channels toward the top of the list will appear toward the left of the row of tabs. On Android, tap the back arrow and on IOS tap Done at the top to see your reordered channels.
