What you need: Windows 7, 8.1 or 10

Share your ebook library on your home Wi-fi, using the superb new version of this open-source program. Calibre now lets you use the browser on your tablet, phone and laptop to securely access and read your ebooks – without having to download e-reader apps, let alone pay for an e-reader device.

This new ‘Content server’ is the most exciting new feature in version 3.0, Calibre’s biggest update since August 2014. The new version also adds support for reading ebooks on highresolution screens such as ipad ‘Retina’ displays, and lets you convert EPUB, MOBI and other ebook formats to Microsoft Word (DOCX).

As ever, Calibre lets you download, read and convert ebooks, and even create and edit your own. It’s not an ebook shop in itself, but rather a portal to ebook sources including WH Smith and Amazon, as well as free sources such as Google Books and the wonderful Project Gutenberg.

Calibre is packed with so many features that it takes a while to know your way around. But it’s easy to use, and even setting up your private Calibre server is fairly straightforward. You will need to allow firewall access, then type a special web address ( http://127.0.0.1:8080) in your PC’S browser. Calibre’s searchable user manual has step-by-step instructions ( www. snipca.com/24755).

Installation is quick and there’s no junk to avoid. Click Download Calibre, then Windows or ‘Windows 64bit’ (or 32bit), and then click ‘Download calibre 64bit’ (or 32bit). Stick with the default ‘Generic’ if you’re not sure which e-reader to tick. Click ‘Add books’ to import ebooks and documents already stored on your PC. To download ebooks, click ‘Get books’ and then search or browse the list of stores. To convert an ebook to DOCX, select it then doubleclick ‘Convert books’. In the window that opens, click the ‘Output format’ dropdown menu, then select DOCX. To share an ebook on your home network using the new ‘Content server’, rightclick it then click ‘Connect/ share’, then ‘Start Content server’. Allow firewall access if prompted. Calibre adjusts ebooks to fit high-resolution screens. To disable this, click the tiny arrows, Preferences, then ‘Look & feel’. Click Automatic, then select Off.
