Why won’t Ultimate Windows Tweaker run?
Q I’D given up on computer magazines, because they’ve become overpriced and filled with a ridiculous amounts of adverts. I like Computeractive because it’s reasonably priced, covers a wide range of operating systems, and offers product reviews and help pages for readers. With the latter in mind it’s my turn to ask for aid.
I downloaded Ultimate Windows Tweaker (UWT) 4.4.1, as recommended in Issue 522’s Best Free Software (page 18). Unfortunately, I can’t get it to run. Windows displays a message asking for permission to run the program but, after clicking Yes, nothing happens. Any ideas? David Thompson
A IS your PC definitely running Windows 10? Although we stated that UWT 4.4.1 is for the latest version of Windows, there’s nothing to stop you downloading and attempting to run the program on a computer running an earlier edition. If you’ve done this, UWT 4.4.1 will indeed go through the motions of launching, displaying the User Account Control (UAC) warning that you describe. However, clicking Yes won’t actually allow the program to run. Instead, UWT shows a warning explaining that the Windows version isn’t supported (see screenshot below).
Our guess is that on your system this warning message flashed up but was probably obscured by another program window. Subsequent attempts at launching UWT would appear to fail, because this warning remains obscured.
Try using the Alt+tab keyboard shortcut to display the message. If you find it, you’ll see that the solution is to download an earlier edition of UWT. If you’re using Windows 8 or 8.1, get UWT 3.0 from www.snipca.com/27297; or for Windows 7 visit www.snipca.com/27298 to download UWT 2.2.
Where’s Libreoffice Calc’s Excel format save option?
Q thanks for including Libreoffice tips in your Make Office Better section. I have just tried to set Libreoffice Calc to always save as ‘Microsoft Excel.xlsx’, as per your instructions (Issue 523, page 47), but don’t seem to be able to find this option in the dropdown menu on my system. I guess I must be doing something wrong, as I know I have the latest version of Libreoffice. Any help would be appreciated. Tony Bolterz Athe
problem is that the exact wording used in this dropdown menu differs slightly between different Libreoffice versions.
In fact, after choosing Spreadsheet in the ‘Document type’ menu, you then need to select either ‘Microsoft Excel 2007-2013 XML’ (see screenshot above) or ‘Microsoft Excel 2007-2013 XML (.xlsx)’ – they’re different labels for the same thing. Finally, click OK.
Why won’t Scantransfer show my photos?
QI
followed the Scantransfer Workshop in Issue 522 (page 42), using the Android method. All works fine until I tap ‘Open website’. The next screen displays a bar with the words ‘Select Files’. I tap this command but there’s no response, so I don’t see the screen shown in the Workshop (so no option to tap Camera, Video or Files). My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7.
Many thanks for an excellent magazine, incidentally. Paul Laxton Athanks.
In this case, the cause is that the Scantransfer website contains elements that are not compatible with your phone’s default browser. This will also be true for some other Android phones. We’ll give instructions for both standard Android and your Galaxy S7.
First, on any Android phone, open the Google Play Store app to find Chrome, or visit www.snipca.com/27296, then tap Install. Now launch Chrome from your home page and Scantransfer will work.
To make Chrome the default browser on your Galaxy S7, open Settings, tap Applications, then ‘Default applications’. Now tap ‘Browser app’, then Chrome. On other Android phones, launch Settings then tap Apps. Tap the cog icon at the top right, Default Apps (see screenshot above), ‘Browser app’, then Chrome.
